ABOUT THE SHOW...
Music by based on Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot “Prologue – Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats” additional material written by Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe; ”Memory” additional material written by Trevor Nunn. The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year—the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories to Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. THE CHARACTERS Grizabella Grizabella is the fallen glamour cat who longs to re-join the Jellicle tribe. Her role is emotionally powerful, requiring a performer who can portray vulnerability and redemption. She sings the iconic song Memory, providing the emotional highlight of the story. Old Deuteronomy Old Deuteronomy is the wise leader of the Jellicle tribe, presiding over the Jellicle Ball and making the final choice for the cat who ascends to the Heaviside Layer. This role requires a performer with gravitas and warmth, as Old Deuteronomy embodies wisdom and kindness. Sings: The Naming of Cats (though not a full solo, Old Deuteronomy sings a significant part and provides narrative context) Rum Tum Tugger The Rum Tum Tugger is a mischievous, attention-seeking cat with a flair for the dramatic. He brings a cheeky energy to the tribe and often becomes the center of attention. His role features dynamic movement and playful interactions. Sings: The Rum Tum Tugger (a lively, energetic solo number) Munkustrap Munkustrap is the narrator and protector of the Jellicle tribe. He guides the audience through the events of the Jellicle Ball and often steps into leadership roles. This character requires strong acting and vocal skills. Bombalurina Bombalurina is a confident and glamorous queen, known for her sharp wit and commanding presence. She often takes the lead in interactions with the other cats, exuding sass and charm. Sings: Macavity: The Mystery Cat (Bombalurina leads the song with a strong vocal performance) Demeter Demeter is a sensitive and anxious queen, often haunted by her fear of Macavity. She forms a close bond with Bombalurina and demonstrates her inner strength in key moments. Sings: Macavity: The Mystery Cat (shared with Bombalurina, but Demeter has vocal moments of her own) Mister Mistoffelees Mister Mistoffelees is the magical cat of the Jellicle tribe. His agility and charm make him a standout in group numbers, with a focus on fluid, elegant dance and an air of mystery. Sings: Magical Mister Mistoffelees (a song that highlights his magical abilities and features a lot of vocal work) Jemima Jemima is a young, sweet queen with a pure and hopeful spirit. She plays a key role in uplifting the tribe and is often a focal point in ensemble moments. This role requires a performer with a gentle, expressive presence. Skimbleshanks Skimbleshanks is the organized and efficient railway cat who brings lively energy to the group. He is a cheerful presence, often taking the lead in upbeat ensemble numbers and adding a sense of fun to the proceedings. Sings: Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat (Skimbleshanks has a featured vocal solo in this upbeat number) Jennyanydots Jennyanydots is a motherly figure within the Jellicle tribe. Her playful personality and nurturing qualities make her a charming addition to the ensemble, particularly in light-hearted scenes. Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer This mischievous duo brings humor and chaos to the story. Their playful energy and synchronized movement create lively moments that add a fun dynamic to the ensemble. Jellylorum Jellylorum is a kind and caring queen who often acts as a protector of the older and more vulnerable cats. Her nurturing presence provides warmth and balance to the group. Asparagus (Gus) Gus, the theatre cat, recalls his glory days with a sense of nostalgia and pride. He is one of the tribe’s most heartfelt characters, requiring a performer with strong acting skills to bring his stories to life. Sings: Gus: The Theatre Cat (Gus performs this song solo, recounting his theatrical past) Victoria Victoria, the elegant white cat, is a featured dancer in the Jellicle Ball. She is a central figure in ensemble dance sequences, requiring technical precision and expressive movement. Sings: Typically a dancer role with no featured singing, though she may harmonize or be part of vocal ensembles. Quaxo Quaxo is a curious and slightly quirky young tomcat, blending into the ensemble but with moments that highlight his playful energy. This role is suitable for a versatile performer who enjoys adding subtle flair to group scenes. Alonzo Alonzo is a charming and protective tomcat, often seen stepping in to support the group. He plays a significant role in ensemble moments, showcasing strength and elegance. Coricopat and Tantomile These mysterious twin cats bring an air of magic and mysticism to the Jellicle Ball. Their synchronized movements create an enchanting presence, making them stand out in group performances. Cassandra Cassandra is an elegant and aloof queen with a sleek, sophisticated demeanor. She adds an air of mystery and poise to the ensemble, often commanding attention with her graceful movements. Admetus Admetus is a quiet and composed tomcat who contributes to ensemble numbers with strong, fluid movements. His calm and collected energy adds depth to group dynamics. Carbucketty Carbucketty is a cheeky and playful young tomcat, adding light-hearted energy to the ensemble. His youthful enthusiasm often shines through in group moments. Bill Bailey Bill Bailey is a lively and agile young tomcat, bringing a sense of fun and athleticism to the ensemble. His dynamic movements make him a standout in group choreography. Macavity Macavity is the villain of the story, a mysterious and threatening presence who creates chaos for the tribe. Production Information
Show dates: 19th - 20th July 2025 Venue: The Avon Valley Theatre, Rugby CASTING We will be holding open auditions for principal casting open to all young people aged 13 - 19 years. The lead ensemble and dance captain roles will be filled by our Senior class students, with supporting ensemble roles played by our Junior and Inter students. Daventry Cast Auditions: Friday 10th January 2025, 7:30pm - 9:15pm at Cedar Grove Clinic Studio, Daventry. Rugby Cast Auditions: Sunday 12th January 2025, 12:45pm - 2:30pm at Cawston Community Hall, Rugby. Attendance during audition week is free, but places must be booked in advance. Successful applicants will be required to join the appropriate Musical Theatre class for their age group, as rehearsals are integrated into our weekly classes.
